SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Assemblymember Michelle Rodriguez introduced Assembly Bill 1628, or the Keeping Infants from Danger (K.I.D) Act. This legislation extends California’s Safe Surrender Law from 72 hours to 30 days.
“AB 1628 reflects long overdue protections that modernize California’s Safe Surrender Law to better meet the realties facing new parents today,” said Assemblymember Rodriguez (D-Ontario). “At a time where women’s rights are constantly under attack, it is imperative we take the necessary steps to codify the strongest protections possible for women and ensure every infant has a safe start to life.”
California’s current 72-hour surrender window does not accurately reflect the physical, emotional, and medical challenges many parents face in the days following childbirth. By extending the surrender period to 30 days, the K.I.D Act provides parents with additional time to make informed, compassionate decisions, while prioritizing infant safety.
The K.I.D Act strengths California’s commitment to protecting newborns, reducing dangerous infant abandonment, and supporting Californian’s during some of the most vulnerable periods of their lives.
